The National Consumers Day Celebration is an annual event. The event is aimed at creating awareness among Malaysian consumers on their rights and responsibilities as a consumer. This is a four month event which consist of various competitions for public at large especially school children and school consumer clubs. Amongst competitions carried out include essay writing competition for various age groups and languages, poster drawing competition, cartoon drawing competition, coloring contest for primary school children, folio and scrap book competition for school consumer clubs, photography competition, inter-university debate competition and short film competition.
The public response to is nationwide event is overwhelming as we receive approximately 25,000 to 30,000 participation annually. The topics of all competitions are related to current or emerging issues in consumerism and social responsibility. The event is an important platform for consumers to channel their views and opinions on current issues concerning consumers at large. The inter universities debate on themes related to Social Responsibilities has been organized for three consecutive years since 2007.
Each year, all inputs from competition entries, especially the essay writing competition, will be analyzed and summarized. A memorandum will be submitted to the all related ministries and members of parliament for their attention. The memorandum, which is a compilation of all Malaysian consumers’ views and recommendations are meant to advocate for better consumer protection framework in the country.
