Competition Information

National Consumer Campaign will be carried out for 48 months from Jun 2008 until Jun 2012

Theme: Change Begins with ME

The competition will be held from 1st August 2008 until 29th August 2008. The closing date of the programme is 29th August 2008 at 5.00 pm. Individual participation only. Participant must be a student in local institution of higher learning.

First Price: Cash prize worth RM 5,000.00
Second Prize: Cash prize worth RM 3,000.00
Third Prize: Cash prize worth RM 1,000.00
10 x Consolation prize: Cash prize worth RM 500.00

The decision made by judges is final and any appeal against the decision will not be entertained.

1st Steering Committee Meeting, Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA
The steering committee in Malaysia will lay the path for AEYNSD, where they will tackle in detail the 5 years strategic plans of the network. They will also finalize several network and operational policies and its organizational structure that will help the network to become more systematic and ensure its democratic process. The said meeting will be devoted for planning, assessment of the network capability and evaluating its potential as well as its sustainability.

Output that are targeted from 1st Steering Committee Meeting:

Framework of official election of the network’s management team (including Overall Coordinator, Europe and Asia coordinator, Secretary and extension officer),
Several network and operational policies and its organizational structure to be developed,
Propose the design the Legal status and entity of AEYNSD,
The 5 year strategic plans of the Asia-Europe Youth Network for Sustainable Development (AEYNSD) for its activities,

Background Information
There is a need to strengthen relations between Asia and Europe, as a reflection of the shift from “aid and trade” to a more “balanced and equal partnership” for both regions. In recognition of this, the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) first convened the Heads of States of Government of different Asian and European countries in Bangkok, Thailand in 1996. Every two years thereafter, the ASEM Summit is convened to increase understanding and enhance cooperation between the two regions, especially in the “three pillars” of development – political, economic, and social.

Consumerism Competition

Consumerism Competition organized by FOMCA in cooperation with Ministry of Domestic Trade And Consumer Affairs is the annual event in conjunction with the Malaysian Consumer Day celebration. This year was the 7th year the programmed held. Every year, organizer will various the contests and improved from the previous program according to consumer requirement along with the importance of consumer education nowadays.

This year, FOMCA will wider its competition promotion activities to all state involving the state consumer organizations. Cooperation with Department of State Education and District are made in order to improve the involving of students and peoples from rural area.

These activities will give chance to the societies to know the role and function of DTACA, FOMCA and related agencies that will protect consumers and identify consumer problem in their area and indirectly can help society to know their right as a consumer through briefing and exhibition that been held along with the promotion activities. The promotion activities in conjunction with the Malaysian Consumer Day 2008 also will be held in the crowd area so these activities will have good response from consumer of all ages.

FLOOD OCCURANCE IN TAMAN GARING, RAWANG, SELANGOR

Site Visit Report: Observations, Analysis and Suggestions

A letter was sent to FOMCA to enquire our advice on flood problem faced by residents of Taman Garing since 2003. The site visit comprised two main issues and the current report is focusing on flood issue.

A brief review of the Taman Garing Residential Associations (TAGRA) explanation:

The issues started when construction of Emerald started (construction by Hong Leong).
Caused major flood in 2003, the retention pond was only built half of its designed size.
Towards end of the 2003, full retention pond size was achieved.
However, the development in Emerald also continued to increase in area.
Subsequent flood cases occurred.
Has caused a lot stress and fear for the affected residents.
The estimated cost for loss due to flood is around 5 million, this is excluding the cost of stress and anxiety as well as discomfort feeling.

OBSERVATION

We have made few observations and the pictures will be included to explain a better solution that the relevant agencies should take up.

The root causes of the flood are equally contributed by these factors:

High sedimentation in the retention pond,
Exit channel from retention pond is too small, a lot of erosion,
‘Blockage’ caused by culvert design, high discharge value over design capacity causes a chocking effect,

There is also another effect that Taman Garing is a low land compared to the area next to it, highland, and the water table (theoretically and practically) will be very high in prevents immediate surface runoff absorption to the soil.
